Chinese manufacturer Godox has announced  the Wistro AD600

This new flash is a 600 Ws lithium-ion powered TTL and HSS monobloc that can be triggered by the Godox X1 TTL remotes.

The Godox Wistro AD600 is a self-contained unit, meaning that the battery is attached to the body of the strobe, instead of having a separate battery pack.

The new Godox Wistro AD600 will have twice the power of the Witstro AD360-II and similar features, meaning that is able to do TTL, high-speed sync and remote manual power control via the Godox X1 radios.

These triggers are available for Nikon and Canon, but it is rumoured that a Sony version will be announced soon.

All this additional power means that the AD600 is significantly heavier than the AD360; the AD600 weighs 2.9 kg.

New with the Witstro AD600 is a 10-watt modeling light, a feature that is sought after by many Witstro bare-bulb flash users.

The AD600 will be released in two different versions: one with a Godox accessory mount and another with a Bowens S-fit mount (AD600B).

Both of them will have a lithium-ion battery pack enabling the strobe to fire up to 500 full power flashes. Godox is also planning to release a remote head which allows users to separate the head from the ballast, like a pack-and-head system. This remote head for either the Godox and Bowens version will be available as an accessory.

What is very notable is that with the release of the Wistro AD600 is that Godox is starting to develop a very strong lighting system. There are studio heads, speedlites and ringflashes, that Godox is able to offer  and once the new 2.4 GHz FT-16 receiver is released they will all be able to be triggered with the use of the X1 triggers. Personally I think Godox is  developing a very good system.

The new movie star: professional video in cinematic resolution

The Leica SL is much more than a professional still-picture camera with video recording capability: it fulfils even the most stringent demands of moviemakers as a fully fledged video camera. Thanks to its 24 MP CMOS sensor and high-performance Maestro II series processor, the Leica SL enables the production of professional videos in 4K resolution. Videos can be recorded in UHD at 30 frames per second or even in Cine4K at 24 frames per second. This program by Cyberlink was another image editing program that came on my radar in my search for a new and hopefully good image editor. I downloaded the 30 day trial from Cyberlink  here. (Available for Windows and OS X)

Installation was straightforward and presented no problems.

Organising and Importing Photo’s

The software offers several ways to import your photos, whether they are located on your camera, removable media or your hard drive. The application does not

allow you to import images  straight from your scanner.
You can batch edit your photos as you import them,  the program also checks for duplicate photos so you don’t finish up with  multiples of images taking up space.

Before you import the images you also can add tags, preset filters or rename your image files.

Under the Library tab, you can customize how you want to organize your photos. Whether you organize your photos by keyword, category, calendar date or rating, the software displays thumbnails of your images. The metadata for your photos, including EXIF and IPTC information, displays along the left side of the screen.

Here you can gather information about a photo’s dimensions, shutter speed, aperture, exposure bias, exposure program, metering mode and focal length.

The application also helps you organize photos by tagging the people in them using faces.

The CyberLink PhotoDirector-7 contains a wide array of new features, which demonstrate significant PhotoDirector-7 improvements from the previous version of the software.

 Photo Director 7  now has blur tools that will make it easier to blur backgrounds and  have a focal point in your image.

It also has new  beautification tools, such as Face Sharper, Eye Bag Removal, Shine Removal, and Eye Enlarger,all very useful tools, including the body reshaping tool.

These new tools will provide you with more freedom in editing photos.

All this having been said is Photodirector-7 the new killer software for image editing.

Well for people who have never used other software I think it can be a very useful tool,

the content aware removal tool was a bit laggy on my machine as well as a few of the other tools I used in my testing of PhotoDirector-7,

but that could be down to my machine.

I did find the raw editor to have  a good interface and all the required tools in place, such as noise reduction,adjustment and selection brushes.

you can also use the EXIF data from your shots to instantly and accurately fix common lens flaws, such as  barrel distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration. If there is no profile for the lens used

it may be  possible to download it from Cyberlink’s Director Zone.

PhotoDirector-7 also has one click presets similar to Photoshop actions, you can use the built in presets,create your own or download them from  within the program, you can also share your own presets also within PhotoDirector-7.

All in all a very good image editing solution from image organising to editing images end to end right from a well supported array of cameras.

So after reading all the hype placed and found all over the internet, statements including “Photoshop Killer” and “Pro photo editing app” I decided to buy Affinity Photo MAS (Mac App Store) version.

I have to admit that I was not as struck as everyone else by Affinity Photo capabilities. The raw development module is seriously lacking and seems to produce very flat and lacklustre images. I am not the only one who has noticed this.

The noise reduction is far from any good as is also most of the raw module.

I will continue to use Phase One Capture Pro 8 for my raw editing.

The user interface is ok and quite intuitive but the results in my opinion are not yet up to speed or offer anything like the results of Photoshops raw module.

Camera profiles have a place slot in the bottom right hand corner but are as yet are not implemented  (Beta 1.3.5).

I could go on about the things that hold this program back for me  but seriously I do not (as yet) beleive it rates a full review.

Things that are taken for granted in Photoshop and other programs take some working around in Affinity Photo, things such as saving for the web offer no preview image before saving by no means being the one of major missing functions.

Serif offer support and help through their forums at  Affinity Photo Forum where users can report bugs and give feature requests, and get answers from the Serif team and other users.

Affinity Photo may have been five years in the making but in my opinion is not yet ready for serious editing and output in volume, it may well serve to fill a gap in the market for Photographers who are not having to work to a deadline or work quickly to produce a volume of images for clients in a rushing doesn’t deserve the hype it is being given.

Affinity Photo also has a Photoshop Plugins function that works not very well or not at all. Plugins such as the Nik/Google collection do not work unless they have the effex prefix in their title, even these work very slowly and do not save the image back into Affinity as a layer on top of the image as in Photoshop.

Photoshop actions have no place either, although Serif say that a macro Persona will be added for users to save frequently used editing steps.

These of course are just my thoughts and opinions and I am sure others will have different views, maybe mine will change over time as the App progresses.

The price of Affinity Photo App is £39.99 which is cheap, but to use the updated beta programs the MAS. version must be installed. I can’t help thinking that in a way for your money you are paying to test out the new features implemented in the Beta versions and give bug reports back to    Serif.

My reccomendation for now at least would be to continue the search for a polished photo editing app.

This is a sad story of what can go wrong so quickly after thinking everything was going to be ok, My partner Ann had Leukaemia but everything seemed to be going well. This is what happened.

Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art Lens

Having been on the market for a fast prime lens , I decided to go with the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens. I went to my local dealer who unfortunately did not have it in stock, but could get one the next day.

Good enough I thought and ordered it.

Let me say straight of the bat this lens is seriously well built and heavy, it seems to ooze quality and has a good heft mounted on the camera.

When my lens arrived needless to say I was eager to try it out and test the focus accuracy of  my new toy.

Disappointed is the only word to describe what I saw when I tried to use it.

The lens severely front focused and the +20 AFMA on my camera’s  adjustment was not enough to bring it into line.

I have read various reviews around the internet some saying it is the best thing since sliced bread and I still hope it is when I either get a new copy or this one calibrated.

I think this just goes to show that Sigma still have quality control problems whether these are worse than other manufacturers I do not know not having dealt with Sigma before.

On getting in touch with Sigma UK they told me either send it in to them or buy a USB dock..

They did also say they would exchange it and that they send lenses out on a next day service to their dealers.

I have not yet decided on either exchanging the lens or buying a USB dock which will also give me access to firmware updates.

I plan on updating this review when I decide which way to go.

No images are in this review as I can not calibrate this particular lens as of yet..

The Df combines intuitive, worry-free dial operation with superior image quality over a broad range of sensitivities in the smallest and lightest FX-format body, making the camera extremely portable. Large metal mechanical dials on the top of the camera enable direct, intuitive operation, offering tactile pleasure of shooting with precision mechanics, and allowing users to feel the joy of creating images that reflect their individual intent. The camera also provides a system that allows users to focus on shooting with the security that comes from visual confirmation of ISO sensitivity, shutter speed, and exposure compensation values, as well as the convenience of direct adjustment of settings at any time, even when the camera is turned off.

The densely packed 39 focus points enable certain acquisition and tracking of the intended subject, and adoption of cross-type sensors, which provide further accuracy, for the 9 points most frequently used at the center of the frame offer more precise focus acquisition. 7 of the focus points support f/8, making accurate autofocusing possible even when a telephoto lens with a maximum aperture of f/4 is used with a 2x teleconverter for a combined maximum aperture of f/8.
Scene Recognition System with built-in 2,016-pixel RGB sensor
The Df is equipped with the Scene Recognition System, which analyzes detailed information acquired from the 2,016-pixel RGB sensor and the image sensor regarding aspects such as scene brightness and colors for optimal control over autofocusing, auto-exposure, i-TTL balanced fill-flash, and auto white balance.
Quick, stress-free response
The Df offers superior, high-speed response with a power-up time of approximately 0.14 s*1, a release time lag of roughly 0.052 s*1, and high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 5.5 fps. It also supports SDXC and UHS-I*2 high-speed memory cards, as well as Eye-Fi memory cards that enable simple wireless transfer of images captured with the camera.

An button that enables quick access to frequently used camera functions
The button, positioned to the bottom left of the camera’s monitor, enables simple access to convenient functions with viewfinder and live view photography, and image playback. Pressing this button displays options for the desired setting, allowing immediate access to setting options for normal shooting, live view photography, and the retouch menu in playback mode.
A variety of live view functions
In addition to the 16-cell framing grid available with previous models, the Df also offers users the choice of a 9-cell framing grid, or display of the 16 : 9 or 1 : 1 aspect ratio in the camera monitor with live view photography. Further, the virtual horizon displayed in the monitor allows users to verify the direction of both roll (tilt to the left or right) and pitch (tilt forward or back), and a roll indicator can also be displayed in the viewfinder. The spot white balance function enables precise white-balance measurement using a specified object or portion of the frame in the live view display. This eliminates the need to prepare a reference object, such as a gray card, and enables quick acquisition of data for subjects that cannot be approached for application of a preset white-balance value without missing photo opportunities.
Power-saving design that supports worry-free focus on shooting
Adoption of more efficient power supply circuitry and use of EXPEED 3, which consumes little power, minimize the camera’s power consumption. When a fully charged compact and lightweight Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL14a supplied with the camera is used, approximately 1,400* still images can be captured.

Use of non-AI NIKKOR lenses
Not only is the Df capable of capturing high-quality images using the latest NIKKOR lenses optimized for digital SLR cameras, it is the first Nikon digital SLR camera equipped with a collapsible metering coupling lever that enables the use of non-AI lenses.

When focal length and maximum aperture value for non-AI lenses are registered with the camera beforehand, optimal exposure can be achieved with exposure metering when the camera aperture setting is matched to the aperture value specified with the aperture ring on the lens by rotating the sub-command dial (supported only in [A] and [M] exposure modes). As the Df is equipped with the Nikon F mount, which has not changed since Nikon released its first SLR camera, the combination of older NIKKOR lenses and a camera incorporating the latest digital technologies allows users to enjoy capturing photographs exhibiting a wide variety of forms of expression.

The new Nikon Retro add campaign seemingly leading to the release of a new retro styled Nikon camera is underway. It appears that a series of videos will be released headed as Pure Photography?

Nikon seem to  be the latest camera company to turn out a retro-style DSLR in what appears to be a new “Pure Photography” ad campaign. In the first of five videos, a photographer is seen snapping pics of the Scottish countryside.

The camera is never seen, the viewer can clearly hear the sound of a shutter clicking,

A new Nikon micro-site shows the video with the text  “Nikon presents a series of short movies depicting a photographer roaming through Scotland with a camera as his only companion. Discover how he reunites with his creative self during this uniquely ambitious trip.”

It appears that the camera could be coupled with the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G.

Well I for one won’t be buying into this latest Nikon camera as my D800/E sit’s on a  Nikon repair bench once again. Hopefully getting my camera back to what it should have been the last time it was repaired. Fujifilm and Panasonic have already gone down this route with retro styled cameras this must be why Nikon fell the need to do the same.

Fujifilm had great success with the X100 and Panasonic launched the  Lumix GX7 Micro Four Thirds camera. I have to admit I own the Fujifilm X100 but haven’t really used it that much and will probably be boxing it up and selling it on. The idea is a good one for sales, but not nearly as good for the photographer using them, I find these styled cameras to be a ok for a pocket carry around camera, also street type photography but not what I would use for serious photography.

I am personally hankering after a medium format back such as the PhaseOne system, but it is still only a pipe dream…..
